Carmelo Papa

Carmelo Papa has had a distinguished lifelong career in the high-tech industry, rising to the ranks of Senior Executive Vice President of STMicroelectronics.  After a few years in the Computer Industry (ICL-International Computers Ltd and General Automation), he joined STMicroelectronics in 1983 in the marketing department of the Discrete and Standard Group Division in Catania, Italy and reaching the role of Group Marketing Director a few years later. In 2000, Papa was appointed Corporate Vice President, General Manager for Emerging Markets (East Europe, Middle East, Africa, India, and Latin America), at the company’s headquarters in Geneva. From 2005 to 2016 he held various positions as Executive Vice President and General Manager for various Product Groups, among which Industrial and Multisegment.  From 2016 until his retirement in 2018, Papa also served as CEO and General Manager of STMicroelectronics Italy, in addition to his role as Senior Executive Vice President.

In parallel to his career at STMicroelectronics, from 2010 to 2016, Papa chaired the European Platform on Smart Systems (EPoSS), a European industrial initiative focused on Nanotechnologies and Smart Systems integration.  In addition, from 2009 to 2012 he was Vice President of Confindustria (Confederation of Italian Industry) in Sicily.

Papa has also served as member of the National Advisory Board of UniCredit in Milan, and Chairman of the Advisory Board of UniCredit in Sicily from 2018 to 2020. Since December 2019, he is also Board Member of the University of Catania.

Carmelo Papa has always been close to social responsibility and sustainability causes of STMicroelectronics, and from 2016 to 2018 was a member of Sodalitas Foundation, which promotes values of sustainability and solidarity in the private sector, and develops trans-sectoral initiatives involving companies, the nonprofit sector, and public institutions.

He joined the Pistorio Foundation as Board Member in May 2018.

Papa holds a degree in Physics from the University of Catania.
