Dear Friends,

As war in Ukraine has just marked one year since its onset on February 24, international attention has also turned to yet another tragedy – the devastating earthquakes that have shaken Turkey and Syria. Following the first major earthquakes on February 6, the Foundation immediately responded with a donation of 10,000 Euros to the emergency relief effort. Since February 6, the death toll has risen to well over 50,000, with hundreds of thousands of buildings either damaged or destroyed, and millions have been left homeless in Turkey and Syria. Aware that our donation is a drop in the ocean, we invite the international community, including civil society, and public institutions and organizations, to continue to donate to this humanitarian emergency.

Burkina Faso New School Classrooms Project

We are pleased to announce that the construction of the extra classrooms in the primary school of Tanguin Village in Burkina Faso co-financed by the Foundation has been completed! The new classrooms are part of the Tanguin Primary school, and each new classroom can hold 50 students. Compressed earth bricks made from scratch were used, respecting local construction practices employing materials that generates less heat, suitable for the very hot climate of the country. We are still accepting donations for the completion funds of furniture for the classrooms. You can donate on this link. Thank you for your support!

Child Protection Policy

We are happy to inform our supporters that we have recently published our Child Protection Policy which you can find on our website. Even though we are a small foundation, we believe this is an crucial requirement for all NGOs working directly or indirectly with minors. Thanks to the guidance of our experienced Board Member Giovanna Bottani who has drafted the policy, we are now in the process of implementing it with our local partners on the field.

Stories from the field - Italy

We are pleased to have renewed a three-year collaboration with Talita Kum in Librino, Catania, in Sicily. This center provides tailored after school tutoring and a wide range of extra-curricular activities from sports and arts and crafts, to robotics and vegetable garden growth and outdoor cultural explorations. There are nearly fifty children enrolled and attendance is at least three times per week for each child. In the most degraded neighborhood of the city, completely lacking in social services, the after-school center has become a focal point for the community and its children, securing the latter’s success in school and optimal social, physical, and mental development and well-being.

Here are some of the testimonials from our beneficiaries:
D.: “I have been coming here since I was 5 and I’m now 13. I love it here because there are so many activities like dance, volleyball, art. I enjoy dance and we also have a show. In volleyball I’ve learned to play and respect rules. I will continue to come here because every day we do different activities. Here I’ve learned to socialize, to have fun, to be more calm and well behaved and many other things, there are no negative aspects at the center.”

C. “I am 14 years old and have been coming here since I was 6. I like the workshops here and that they help us with our homework. I have learned to become better at school and get good grades and make friends. I recommend kids to come here because it is a fabulous place.”

M. “Hi, I am 12 years old. I am from Catania and I live in Librino. I have been coming here for the past five years and also take part in the summer school program here, and we’ve been to the beach and to the acquapark. I love Talita Kum because my dear friends are here, and I love the kindness of the educators who help me do my homework. Especially one of the educators is very sweet, smart, and funny. Here I’ve learned to behave, to do my homework, and to get along with friends and with new students. I learned not to fight with others and to be united. I already knew these things but I didn’t make an effort to put them in practice before.”

Join the Global Climate Strike on March 3

Every Global Strike since 2018 we encourage all our supporters and friends to join the climate resistance movement and protests. While we must all do our part to reduce our carbon footprints – by flying less, adopting a plant-based diet, using solar panels and renewal energy for our homes and workplaces, and switching to electric vehicles or even better to public transport, it is important that as active citizens we use our power to vote for political parties who place the climate emergency as their top priority, and to send clear messages to our governments that we need immediate concrete action. Protesting is also an effective way of sending a message to our leaders, as it has proven successful in history for civil rights movements and also for the environment. The larger the mass protests, the more governments will feel pressured to pay attention to the needs of the people they are meant to represent rather than the interests of multinationals.
