All the 80 children supported by the Pistorio Foundation have passed and are continuing their education at the school campus in Lithang. The children are making visible progress, both academically and in terms of integrating with the lifestyle at the school campus.
The teachers are very happy with the children’s results. They are always very diligent in class, they always pay attention and collaborate with their peers and teachers and they are very motivated to do their homework and appreciative of their chance to be able to receive an education.
The level of the education at the school is very high: all the students passed with high marks and took part in a reading competition of ancient Tibetan poetry with other schools of the province and came out first. The previous year, in a province wide examination, the school positioned itself as the best in maths and in Tibetan and did well in Chinese also.
During volunteer visits, students expressed how glad they were to have the opportunity to study and have better prospects for their future in a modern world and therefore be able to help their families. Formerly their lives were spent helping their families look after the animals, taking them to pasture on the hills up to 5000m of altitude, milking and taking care of the animals, and helping their parents prepare the cheeses and food. The older children had to look after the younger ones and help the mother keep the tent in order. None of them had any possibility of learning to read and write because their parents were totally illiterate. Now they can learn these skills, in addition to maths and sciences, while maintaining alive practice of traditional Tibetan dances and crafts.
